Case Studies

Scaling a Design Organization

Experience.com, Online Reputation Management SaaS

Role: Sr. UX Designer → VP of Product Design Timeline: 2019–2025

The Challenge

When I joined as the sole designer, the company was preparing to rebuild its entire platform from scratch. The existing product had grown unwieldy. The codebase was difficult to maintain, the UI was inconsistent, and the team struggled to ship quickly. Leadership made a bold decision: start fresh with a modern tech stack.

Outcomes

  • Scaled team from 1 to 8 designers while progressing from IC to VP
  • Built design system from zero during ground-up platform rebuild
  • Increased shipping velocity 2-3× through design operations
  • Launched freemium tier that grew user base by nearly 50,000

Unifying Two Products Post-Merger

Edgio, Edge Computing & Web Application Platform

Role: Director of Design Timeline: 2022–2024

The Challenge

Edgio formed from the merger of two companies, each with its own product, interface, and design language. Users from both legacy platforms needed to be migrated to a single, unified experience. It had to feel familiar enough to ease the transition but fresh enough to signal a new chapter.

Outcomes

  • Led product unification strategy mapping both interfaces and defining the combined vision
  • Created unified design system honoring the best of both products
  • Balanced leadership with hands-on work as both manager and IC contributor
  • Delivered unified platform that successfully migrated users from both legacy products

Test Designer: Crawl, Walk, Run

Rainforest QA, Automated Software Testing Platform

Role: Product Designer Timeline: 2018–2019

The Challenge

Creating automated tests was still a manual, technical process. Users needed to write detailed test scripts, which created a barrier for teams without dedicated QA engineers. The opportunity: what if users could create tests just by showing us what they wanted to test?

Outcomes

  • Shipped Test Designer feature using incremental crawl-walk-run methodology
  • Enabled non-technical users to generate automated QA tests from video walkthroughs
  • Designed and implemented unified color system consolidating conflicting libraries
  • Wrote production React code to implement the design system

Preparing for Acquisition

Sencha, Enterprise JavaScript Framework

Role: UX Designer → Product Design Lead Timeline: 2015–2017
Sencha Design Guide

The Challenge

Sencha provided enterprise JavaScript frameworks and tools for developers building complex web applications. As a B2B developer tools company, design quality was a key differentiator in a technical market, and we needed to prepare for a major acquisition.

Outcomes

  • Progressed from UX Designer to Product Design Lead with hiring responsibilities
  • Shipped multiple new products in collaboration with PMs and developers
  • Built and maintained design systems across product lines
  • Prepared for successful acquisition completed late 2017

Placeholder Magazine Website

The Project

Placeholder Magazine is a nonprofit online publication covering arts and culture in California's Central Valley, a region often overlooked by mainstream media. For several years, I led both design and development for the publication, applying my skills in service of community storytelling.

What I Did

  • Designed visual identity and website for the publication
  • Developed and maintained the site end-to-end
  • Collaborated with writers, editors, and photographers to bring stories to life
  • Demonstrated range beyond SaaS in service of community and culture
Angie Hemans

I'm Angie, a design leader who still loves to make things.

I've spent the last decade at the intersection of design and engineering, leading teams while staying hands-on with the work. I've scaled a design org from 1 to 8, shipped products that grew user bases by tens of thousands, and built design systems from the ground up. I often implement them in code myself.

My path to design leadership started with a deep curiosity about how things work. I learned early on that great design doesn't exist in a vacuum. It lives in the code, in the systems, and in the way teams collaborate to ship. That's why I've always stayed close to implementation.

Today, I'm most energized by the challenge of building something meaningful. Whether that's a product, a team, or a system that helps both thrive, I want to be in the work, not just directing it from the sidelines.

I'm currently exploring design leadership and senior IC opportunities. If you're building something meaningful and want a design leader who can also build, I'd love to hear from you.
